Why Should We Pick Up After Our Pets?
Every time it rains, thousands of pounds of pet waste wash down storm drains and into streams, rivers
and lakes. If not disposed of properly, pet waste flows directly into nearby streams and creeks without
being treated at wastewater treatment facilities.

A recent U.S. Geological Survey study of streams and creeks in the Kansas City region showed that
bacteria associated with pet waste is the source of approximately 25% of the bacteria in samples
collected from local waterways. When pet waste is disposed of improperly, water quality isn't the only
thing that suffers; your health may be at risk, too. Adults working in their gardens, children playing outside
and family pets are the most at risk for infection from some of the bacteria and parasites found in pet
waste.
Mixing your pet waste in your home composting pile can introduce toxic contaminants to your gardening soil. Pet waste may contain pathogens such as
bacteria, viruses and parasitic worms that can be transmitted to humans who are gardening in contaminated soils or who are recreating in infected waters.

Many materials such as meat, feces from meat-eating animal, fats, and paper diapers can legally be composted on a commercial scale only in systems
that meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for pathogen (disease) destruction. These standards are window
temperatures over 55 C (131F) for a minimum of 15 days and the pile turned at least five times, OR an in-vessel or static aerated pile that meets
temperatures over 55 C continuously for a minimum of 72 hours. These specifications are not going to be met by the backyard compost piles.  Since few
home composting piles are "managed piles", they should not be used for disposing of risky materials such as cat litter and dog doo.
Please Use Community Sponsored Animal Waste Programs Whenever Possible
A well run community composting program will successfully be able to compost animal waste into usable compost:

Good composting removes raw dog waste from the environment where it can pollute groundwater and streams.
Good composting destroys pathogens and produces a safe soil amendment.
Good on-site composting eliminates transporting dog waste to a disposal facility. This saves time, money, energy, and landfill
space.
Good composting produces a quality soil additive that improves both the physical condition and fertility of the soil.
Be Careful When You Home Compost Your Pet Waste
Contaminants in Pet Waste
Campylobacteriosis - a bacteria causing gastrointestinal illness in humans
Cryptosporidium - a protozoan parasite causing gastrointestinal illness in humans space.
Toxocariasis - roundworms that may be transmitted from dogs to humans
What You Can Do
Pick up pet waste from your yard.  It is not a fertilizer
Keep pet waste away from gardening soils and any other soils meant for food sources
Carry Earth-friendly dog waste bags while walking your dog to pick up and dispose of
waste properly. When you dispose of pet waste, wrap it carefully to avoid spilling during
collection.
